During His life, Jesus taught on laying up treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:20) and His “parable of the talents” points to an eternal reward for those who faithfully serve Jesus (Matthew 25: 14-30). In this parable, two servants are told “Well done, good and faithful servant.” In the same way, as believers, we long to hear “Well done, good and faithful servant” from Jesus at the end of our lives. We are saved by grace through faith, but we are saved “to do good works” (Ephesians 2: 8-10).
Just after the parable of the talents in Matthew 25, Jesus teaches what it looks like to live by faith. In verses 31-40, Jesus says that to love and serve others is equivalent to faithfully serving Him. Although serving Him faithfully is not limited to this list, Jesus says that by feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, clothing those in need, and visiting the sick and those in prison, we show our love for Him (Matthew 25:35–40). Essentially, to walk by faith is to follow Jesus’ two essential commands: to love God and love others.
Application: Write out three ways you plan to live out your faith by serving someone else.
